Roll Over and Die caught my attention–at least initially–with its 1980s fantasy feel. It’s a straight pulpy dark fantasy dealing with a female protagonist chasing after the tormented scarred damsel in distress instead of the usual male savior doing the deed. I like pulpy fantasy slock. Slock, by the way, means drench or gulp. Slock stories are designed to gulp down and to quench boredom. If you are wondering what I mean by pulpy, the term pulp traces to fiction. Pulp westerns, pulp fantasy, and other pulp refers to short, inexpensive paperbacks made from cheap paper that yellowed or browned not too long after you bought the book. You could find these slocky novels everywhere in the last century for just a few dollars. They were good for a casual afternoon read. They were often filled with action, sex, and simple black-and-white stories that were as compressed as the wood shavings used to make the cheap paper. Sometimes I miss the world before the internet dominated everything. Light novels are cousins of pulp novels in many ways, just not as inexpensive. Roll Over and Die would’ve fit in with the pulp fantasy stories. It even carries the silly names like Flum Apricot, Milkit, and Eterna Rinebow. Milkit immediately made me think of Ian Fleming names like Pussy Galore. Par for pulp and pulp adjacent novels. Anyway, the story has Flum thrown out of the hero’s party because her divine gift of reversal proved useless. She also has terrible stats. This isn’t an isekai, but RPG mechanics seem unavoidable even in straight fantasy at this point. She’s sold into slavery, but is too useless to be a working slave and too feisty and strong willed to be a sex slave. So, the slaver decides to use zombies and a cursed sword to dispose of her, Milkit, and other unsellable slaves. When Flum grabs the cursed sword–which melts whomever touches it–her reversal gift turns the curse into a strength. Her stats increase, and she frees herself and Milkit. Milkit, for her part, was born as a slave and doesn’t understand freedom. She believes Flum is her new master. Milkit wears bandages over her face to hide scarring caused by her previous master. Flum and Milkit eek out a living with Flum doing the usual overpowered adventurer thing, making enemies of the local adventurers’ guild leader in the process. And then the story compression kicks in. The story at this point not only begins to feel rushed. It also starts to feel jumpy, for lack of a better term. Some beats see more development than others, especially the found family and yuri elements. Milkit and Flum fall for each other, and Flum creates a found family with Eterna, a witch and a former member of the hero’s party; Eterna left soon after Flum is forced out of the party. A member of the Church of Origin, Sara, joins the family along with a blind girl named Ink who flees from a church facility. This is a fantasy, so the church is the villain. No surprises there. Anyway, the found family sees a fair bit of development until the main conflict suddenly crashed in on it. It’s not that the main conflict isn’t developed. It’s compressed and shifted aside in favor of the yuri elements before being brought out almost like a jump scare in a horror film. You know it’s coming, but it feels off or even yawn-worthy when it happens. At least, that’s how I feel about jump scares. The end result is a story that feels rushed. It feels “and then and then and then” writing, which fits how pulp stories work. Pulp stories push forward with fast plotting with scenes that hook into each other. Roll Over and Die starts that way and then slows into slice-of-life scenes before remembering its a dark fantasy again. The slice-of-life scenes help increase the threat when the dark fantasy stuff happens, like Milkit being captured by her original owner, but that stuff is too easily resolved by Flum. She feels like she “teleports” to the confrontation without any journey. Some fights with the side characters are even reduced to exposition, stating how they helped Flum by taking out some side threats. I haven’t read the source material, but I suspect there’s a lot of compression and glossing over of events going on, especially compared to the, by-comparison, leisurely pace of the beginning episodes. The story hooks later plot developments in scenes that happen before them, but the hooks aren’t developed. Milkit’s previous owner is eluded to, and there’s a scene where mentioning the owner’s name makes Milkit drop a tray of food, but there’s not much more development than that. We don’t know how Milkit’s owner is related to the Church of Origin, which is trying to revive the evil god Origin for…reasons…and works rather openly, but the owner seems affiliated with them. All the hooks for the events that just happen would work better if the events were led into rather than Flum simply learning something bad happened, like Milkit being kidnapped, and then appears to save the day with little searching or conflict between. Flum sometimes feels like Superman, flying between events and saving the day. That’s the compression at work. Roll Over And Die isn’t bad enough to make you want to roll over and die yourself, but it fails even as a pulp story. It tries to do too much and not enough at the same time. The anime can’t decide if it wants to be a fantasy yuri slice of life with some heroing or if it wants to be a slocky plot-driven hero story with downtime spent on yuri slice of life. It doesn’t lean far enough into either. I’ve pondered why anime studios will produce titles like this one where the adaption of the source material might discourage people from seeking out those manga or novels. While I haven’t read Roll Over and Die‘s novels, novels are denser than anime by their nature, so adaption into anime already requires compression and cuts. I don’t really blame the animation team or directors. Timelines and the need to produce are real pressures. Frankly, it’s amazing how high quality anime is nowadays considering the speed studio churn titles out. Even the lowest-quality anime is still better than the lowest quality of yesteryear. So should you watch Roll Over and Die? No. There are better handled dark fantasy and yuri stories out there. The first few episodes of the anime are fairly interesting, but even if you like pulp fantasy there’s not enough pulpiness here. If you are interested in the story, I suggest reading the source material rather than watching the anime through. Although, I haven’t read it myself, but I’m a librarian (once one always one) and people need to read more books. It’s a pity people have lost the habit of carrying those old pulp paperbacks with them. Those novels weren’t high quality–although, you could find some surprisingly high-quality authors sometimes–but they were better than the brain-rot our phones cause.
