Chainsmoker Cat revels in being lewd, crude, and rude. The comedy follows Yaniko and other beastfolk who live in a small apartment building. Yaniko lives in squalor, which the series uses to disgust the audience, and is addicted to smoking to the point where she can’t do anything (and I mean anything) without a cigarette in her mouth. The other beastfolk have their own addictions. Yakuko smokes marijuana and has a, never stated but heavily implied, heroin addiction. Hameko is a high-school gamer and livestreamer who is addicted to the online attention. Kaoruko, a fellow smoker, likes making others laugh while lacking any comedic skill. She’s the most put together of the crew. Aruko suffers from alcoholism and spends most of the day drinking and sleeping in her room. Finally, the only humans in the apartment, Saori who works as a hentai manga artist and Oya, the landlord, share a kink for beastfolk. The comedy puts these personalities in awkward situations centered on their various addictions, usually with Yaniko disgusting everyone, and body humor. Poop, fart, and sex jokes abound. The lewdness, crudeness, and drug use has led some platforms to yank the anime. Ani-One Asia and Bahamut Animation Crazy pulled the show because of a scene showing Yakuko injecting a “vaccine” and because all the smoking may be in violation of tobacco-use prevention policies. Japan’s Broadcasting Ethics & Program Improvement Organization reviewed the anime, particularly focused on Yakuko’s self-injection scene. The organization eventually decided the anime was within “acceptable limits in terms of freedom of expression” (Parker, 2026; Pineda,2026). The show can’t be misconstrued as promoting smoking, even though it features real cigarette brands, because of how filthy–finger stains, wall stains, foul breath, revolting odor–Chainsmoker Cat shows smoking to be. It’s curious Mevius or any of the brands would tolerate their association with the anime. If anything, Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You could be seen as promoting smoking thanks how it portrays smoking as a cool way to connect with someone. Chainsmoker Cat is designed to be offensive, unlike Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You, which likely plays into the discomfort some feel. The comedy is supposed to be uncomfortable! Despite the low-brow humor, Chainsmoker Cat offers sometimes subtle commentary about despair and the lives of people on the edges of society. All of the characters live on the margin and numb their despair using their various addictions. Beastfolk aren’t treated well. During a scene when the crew plays a board game together, the game bars them from certain actions and jobs because they are beastfolk, relegating them to low-end jobs. Yaniko works various dangerous, dirty, and temporary jobs. She burns the money on cigarettes despite how she has only a year to live; a doctor diagnoses her with lung cancer, which she shrugs off. Yaniko lives in the moment. In another scene, Yakuko wants to go stag beetle hunting, something young boys do. The others criticize her for such a young-boy hobby and don’t go with her. Only Yaniko joins her as Yakuko leaves. The scene illustrates the despair that sits under all the comedy. Whenever any of the beastfolk try to be normal, they’re met with resistance. The stonewalling creates the despair that drives their various addictions. Yaniko’s younger sister, Imoko, shares this marginalization. Imoko loves her elder sister and seeks her well-being throughout various episodes. Imoko is responsible and respected…to a point. Several scenes show Imoko with her human friends on their way to and from high school. Her friends often comment about her cat-like nature. While they appreciate it, Imoko acts like a cat for their laughs. She performs for the humans while her elder sister refuses to perform and confirm. Imoko becomes accepted because of this, but she isn’t portrayed as a equal, even among her friends. The scenes are subtle but noticeable, especially after the board game episode. Even the humans Oya and Saori have some despair about them. Oya is single, and his comedic scenes anchor into his desire for companionship and intimacy. The various sex jokes involving his beastfolk blowup doll and his erections link to scenes where his loneliness comes to the fore. He never moves on any of the beastgirls. He looks out for them in his own way. Although, he has the habit of never knocking; no doubt because he knows he will get to glimpse them in some sort of compromised state or another. But he’s tolerant of them and doesn’t marginalize the girls as the other sections of society does–even if he sexualizes them. Saori despairs of the crushing grind of working as a mangaka chasing deadlines. Her kink for the beastfolk is about the same as Oya’s. She puts the girls in compromising outfits and positions to act as references for her hentai. She pays them for the modeling and doesn’t marginalize the girls even as she sexualizes them in her manga. Oya and Saori split sexualizing away from marginalizing, but both of them exploit the beastfolk’s situation in their own ways. However, they don’t treat the girls as insignificant or as subhuman. Chainsmoker Cat is not sophisticated by any means, despite this social commentary buried under the crude humor. The anime wants us to feel disgusted toward Yaniko in particular, The show wants the audience to laugh at the misfortune and self-inflicted wounds of the characters: schadenfreude, in other words. It pokes fun at how anime fans like catgirls by showing them in as much squalor as possible. Oya and Saori act as stand-ins for the gaze of the audience. Do I recommend Chainsmoker Cat? No. I can’t recommend this story unless you enjoy lewd, crude humor. I felt sorry for the characters more than I felt amused. Although, I admit the scene where Yaniko farts into a loudspeaker while the girls work for a political messaging service was funny, considering how political talk is essentially verbal farting. The commentary about the links between despair and addiction won’t be enough to keep you watching if you don’t enjoy the humor.
